There’s an argument on Tumblr that I keep catching pieces of; something about how white kids with dreadlocs are being disrespectful toward certain races and that its a cultural thing.

My standpoint:

There can’t be picking and choosing when it comes to acceptable appearance practices. Saying “white” kids can’t have dreadlocs without being racist is similar to saying they can’t have their left nostril pierced because it was a practice of Indian women. Same with a septum piercing, commonly used by the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas.

Also, if its racist to incorporate cultural practices (different than your own) into your life, then how are we to progress as a more unified race? We have people complaining that others are too stuck in their ways, there isn’t enough tolerance, we are all equal, etc. But then it is combatted with “you’re not allowed to do this because of your race”.

Dictating which races can wear what hairstyles and piercings, tattoos, clothing, is the kind of racist behavior that keeps fueling the fire of hatred among people.
